The Ethiopia Deaf Experiences develops and manages several projects that are aimed at creating positive awareness about deafness, Deaf Culture, and Sign Language, and help to create opportunities for work and employment. The projects we are currently working on, are:

Deaf Workshops

A group of Deaf actors give workshops to hearing people about Deafness, Deaf Culture, and Sign Language. The workshops are adjusted to different target groups like schools, government agencies, companies, and tourists.

General workshops and tourists
We offer workshops about non verbal communication and sign language for everybody that is interested. Every first Saturday of the month, our team performs at Le Louvre hotel between 2 pm – 5 pm. This program, called silent Saturdays, is available for everyone who is interested. We can also adjust the programs for private performances for tourists.

Schools
The Deaf actors visit (regular) schools and introduce the children with deafness and Deaf Culture. With all kinds of fun and exciting assignments, the children learn what it is like to be Deaf, how you can communicate with Deaf people, and that deafness does not have to be a disability. In Ethiopia, many people confuse deafness as a form of mental disability. This is very wrong! By participating in this workshop, we can present a positive view on deafness and prevent children of growing up with negative perceptions.

Government agencies
Many government agencies have to deal with deaf people frequently. On a daily base deaf people have to engage with government agencies all over the countries. Contrary to what’s normal in the west, there are almost no sign language interpreter services available in Ethiopia. So awareness about how to communicate with deaf people for government employees is essential. We have developed a workshop aimed at government employees to help them to understand Deaf people better and to teach them the basics of non verbal communication.

Corporate team building
We also have customized our workshops specifically for companies and organizations in the form of a team building program. By using sign language and non verbal communication, teams of employees have to complete different kind of assignments. In complete silence they have to learn how to communicate with each other without using spoken word. It challenges their creativity and is very fun to do!

Deaf tourism

In cooperation with The Netherlands based Wesemann Travel, we offer guided tours in sign language. We work with Ethiopian tour guides who are skilled in either ASL or international sign language, and we work with local hearing interpreters. We work with professional tour companies and can organize complete organized tours all over Ethiopia, with as many deaf suppliers as possible.
